October 27, 2006

On October 27, 2006 at 1:21am, a DeForest police officer on patrol observed a vehicle operating in the Village of DeForest with suspended registration plates.  When the officer turned to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle accelerated away from the officer down Sunset Drive out of the sight of the officer.  The officer attempted to locate the vehicle and was unable to find the vehicle.  A short time later, officers were flagged down by residents in the 400 block of Sunset Drive, who advised that a vehicle had crashed through a house at 468 Sunset Drive and that a male subject was seen fleeing the scene on foot.

DeForest Police discovered a Jeep Cherokee that had lost control on Sunset Drive, went off the roadway, struck a tree, and then went through the side of the garage, out of sight of the officers.  The vehicle had then struck a car parked in the garage causing very severe damage.  DeForest Fire/EMS was requested to assist in looking through the extensive wreckage for any possible victims.  The home was occupied at the time and the resident was not injured and no other occupants from the vehicle were found.

Utilizing assistance from Dane County Sheriff’s deputies and a K9 officer from the Town of Madison, a K9 track for the suspect was conducted while officers investigated the registered owner of the vehicle and determined that her 14 year old son was missing as well as her vehicle.

The missing 14 year old was located a few houses from the crash and later admitted to taking the vehicle without his mothers permission and later crashing the vehicle into the house.

Charges are pending on the juvenile for Unreasonable Speed, Operating after Suspension, Reckless Driving, Hit and Run, and Failure to fasten seatbelt, as well as a probation violation for a prior burglary conviction.  The suspect was released to his mother.

Charges of obstructing an officer were also filed against a resident of the home where the suspect was located.

Damage to the home is estimated at $18,000 as well as both vehicles being a total loss.
